Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to mark Seachtain Na Gaeilge with students in Leinster House

The Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht will mark Seachtain Na Gaeilge with a unique event in the Leinster House tomorrow, 7th March.

Secondary school students from  a Coláiste Alexandra, Baile an Mhuilinn, Áth Cliath; Gaelcholáiste Chill Dara, Droichead Nua, Cill Dara; and Scoil Phobail na Dúghlaise, An Dúghlas, Corcaí are being invited to address members of the Committee and other Members of the Houses from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. in Committee Room 4 on the following three topics:

• Sport,
• Education and Employment,
• Irish Culture and language.

The Committee is inviting up to 10 students from each of the three schools to participate. One student from each school is being asked to address Members on the Houses of the Oireachtas on one of the topics. The addresses will be followed by a discussion involving the Members and the students present. 

Committee Cathaoirleach Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “We’re looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with students from Coláiste Alexandra, Gaelcholáiste Chill Dara, and Scoil Phobail na Dúghlaise.  This is a great opportunity for the Committee and the Oireachtas to celebrate and mark Seachtain Na Gaeilge with many of the young people who will play a key part of keeping the Irish language alive and part of our culture into the future.

Seachtain Na Gaeilge, a non-profit organisation which helps to promote the Irish language and culture, at home and abroad, during a two-week festival held at the beginning of March every year. The festival motto is “Croí na Gaeilge – It’s You (Heart of the Language – It’s You!) and it aims to include everyone, no matter where they are, in the renewal of the Irish language. Over 150,000 people of all ages and all levels of fluency in Irish take part in the festival which ranges from street Céilís to television programmes.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 7th March, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 11.30.
