Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education to discuss Child Benefit Reform

8 May 2012, 17:10

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education will discuss Child Benefit Reform with officials from the Department of Social Protection at its meeting tomorrow, 9th May.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Child benefit payments play an important role in tackling child poverty and are very necessary for low income families.  However, families with children no matter their means, income or how rich they may be are entitled to child benefit. Many reforms have been suggested for changing our current system of child benefit, with some people arguing for means testing the payment, while others have suggested that those on higher incomes should be taxed on the child benefit they receive. Tomorrow we will meet with officials from the Department of Social Protection where we will have an opportunity to tease out and explore the various issues involved in reforming child benefit and discuss the options that have been suggested by commentators in various quarters. Members will be able to raise any concerns they may have on the reform of the child benefit system.”

Before this meeting, the Committee will carry out scrutiny of EU legislative proposals: COM(2011)932; COM(2011)936; COM(2012 )41; COM(2012)111; COM(2012)112; COM(2012)114

This meeting will start at 9.30am on Wednesday, May 9th in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.
