Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman discusses case of Yulia Tymoshenko with Ukrainian Ambassador

9 May 2012, 16:41

Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen TD met with Ambassador of the Ukraine in Leinster House yesterday at the Chairman’s request to discuss the case of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “At the meeting with the Ukrainian Ambassador yesterday I expressed concern about the reported maltreatment of Mrs Tymoshenko during her incarceration and, in particular, about the way in which her medical needs were being responded to. I also expressed the Committee’s concern that moves by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General against opposition politicians, including the prosecution and conviction of Mrs Tymoshenko, may be politically motivated. The Joint Committee welcomes confirmation from the Ambassador that it had been arranged that President Grybauskaite of Lithuania would meet Mrs Tymoshenko in her place of detention and we also welcome the Ambassador’s commitment to maintain contact with the Chairman with a view to meeting again after the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 14th May at which Ukraine is due to be discussed.”
