Agriculture Committee to meet Secretary General on late farm payments

16 May 2012, 09:02

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will tomorrow meet with Tom Moran, Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The meeting will cover the administrative priorities for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with specific reference to customer service issues.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “The meeting with Mr Moran tomorrow is an important part of our Committee’s work.  The meeting is a six-monthly review of the performance of his Department, in line with the enhanced role for the Committees in oversight of Government Departments provided for in the Programme for Government.

“Committee Members will be particularly keen to press the Secretary General on concerns around late payments. Last year 1,700 farmers lost out on €1.6m in payments due to late application and Members look forward to the opportunity to explore Department plans to minimise and eliminate the inconvenience of  late payments.”

The meeting tomorrow Thursday 17 May will be held in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000 tomorrow Thursday morning at 9:30 am. The Committee will firstly consider a range of EU legislative proposals relating to trade of agricultural produce with non-EU countries, followed by the briefing and exchange with Mr Moran.
