EU Affairs Committee to discuss shaping policy on culture and development aid

16 May 2012, 13:06

The Joint Committee on European Affairs will hear detailed discussions tomorrow from leading figures in culture and creative industries and development aid.

Grainne Millar of the Temple Bar Cultural Trust will discuss the role of cultural and creative Industries in the EU2020 Strategy. The Committee will then engage with Hans Zomer of Dóchas, an umbrella group for Irish NGOs, on using the upcoming Irish Presidency in 2013 to shape EU policy on development.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting will focus on two distinct topics where Ireland has the track record to make a significant contribution to shaping EU policy.

“The Temple Bar Cultural Trust works to support the development of culture and art in Dublin’s cultural hub. Ms Millar, whose organisation does so much to bring cultural activities to Dubliners on the ground, will provide the Committee with a distinct perspective on the role of cultural and creative industries in the EU’s economic recovery. The EU2020 growth strategy is centred on innovation and sustainable growth.

“Following this exchange, the Committee will meet Hans Zomer of Dóchas. Ireland can be rightly proud of its NGOs and public servants in contributing to the development of some of the world’s poorest countries. The discussion with Mr Zomer tomorrow will allow the Committee focus on how Ireland can use this enviable reputation to influence policy at European level, particularly in the context of next year’s EU Presidency.
