Communications Committee to resume discussions with RTE management

21 May 2012, 14:20

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will tomorrow resume discussion with senior figures in RTE on issues arising from the Fr Kevin Reynolds defamation case

The meeting, which will commence at 2 pm, will be broadcast live on Oireachtas UPC channel 801.

Following on from last Wednesday’s meeting, the Committee will resume discussions with Tom Savage, Chairman of the RTÉ Board and Director General Noel Curran.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Our Committee has an important oversight role in the general policy direction of public bodies. Consequently, our overriding concern is to ensure a pathway is found to restore public confidence in the national broadcaster, whose reputation was seriously damaged by the serious editorial and managerial failures in this case.

“Building on discussions with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and RTE last week, the Committee will continue to explore with Mr Curran and Mr Savage what procedures would be introduced in general policy at RTE to safeguard against a repeat of the irresponsible journalism in this case.

“With the meetings being broadcast live on UPC Channel 801, consideration of the hugely significant issues at hand tomorrow will go beyond the Committee Rooms of Leinster House to 957,000 people in 328,000 homes.”

This meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 22 May at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings will be broadcast live to UPC's digital cable customers Oireachtas channel 801 and on the Oireachtas website.
