Oireachtas Committee to discuss a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland

23 May 2012, 13:24

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will this week meet with representatives of the Human Rights Consortium, who are campaigning for an inclusive Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “The purpose of tomorrow’s meeting is to listen to calls for a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland, for which provision was originally included in the Good Friday Agreement. The Human Rights Consortium, since its establishment in 2000, has been actively campaigning for a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights. Its membership comprises almost 200 non-governmental organisations, trade unions and community groups across Northern Ireland.

“Of interest to the Committee will be research commissioned by the Consortium, which shows that a majority of the supporters from all the main political parties in Northern Ireland support a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland.”

Following the discussions, the Committee will meet with representatives from Safefood, the promotional body responsible for food safety and healthy eating on the island of Ireland.

Deputy Tuffy continues: “Our Committee has a keen interest in the work programmes and progress made by the six North-South bodies established under the Good Friday Agreement. The second part of our meeting tomorrow allows us to meet with Safefood, one of those bodies. In promoting food safety and healthy eating, the body works in the four key areas of education, research, nutrition and consumer communications.”

The meeting takes place on Thursday at 12 noon in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. It is anticipated that the first session with representatives from the Human Rights Consortium will last approximately 45 minutes. Engagement with Safefood representatives will follow at 12:45 p.m.
