Environment Minister to attend Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht ahead of European Environment Council Meeting

Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan, TD will attend the meeting of the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, Wednesday 6th June.

Committee chair Ciaran Lynch, TD said: “We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow Minister Hogan who will address the Committee ahead of the forthcoming European Environment Council meeting and we appreciate his appearance before the Committee to brief members on the Council agenda items. Oireachtas Committees play a key role in ensuring that EU legislation, proposals and policies are properly scrutinised and examined.”

Among the Council agenda items are:

• The Council will have an orientation debate on the proposal for a decision regarding accounting rules and action plans on greenhouse gas emissions and removals resulting from activities related to land use, land use change and forestry.

• The Council is expected to adopt conclusions setting the framework for a 7th EU Environment Action Programme (EAP), a successor to the current which expires on 22 July 2012.

• The Council is due to adopt conclusions in preparation for the international conference on chemicals management (Nairobi, Kenya, 17-21September 2012) whose goal is that by 2020 chemicals should be used and produced in ways that do not lead to significant adverse effects on human health and the environment and the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury (Punta del Este, Uruguay, 27 June -2 July 2012).

• The Council will also take note of a report from the Presidency on the state of play concerning the Commission’s communication ‘A roadmap for the transition to a competitive low-carbon economy’, which aimed to establish a sustainable and cost-effective trajectory to 2050, on the basis of milestones for domestic greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

This meeting with Minister Hogan will take place on Wednesday, 6th June, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 10.30am.
