The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform will continue its hearings on proposed whistle-blower legislation this week when it will get the observations of a number of stakeholders and interested parties.
Today, Tuesday, 5th June the Committee will meet with Paul Egan, Partner, Mason Hayes & Curran and author on company law and corporate governance. On Wednesday, 6th June, Dr Elaine Byrne, Lecturer, Trinity College Dublin will attend the Committee meeting.
Committee chairman Alex White, TD said: “We are looking forward to our meetings this week with Paul Egan and Dr Elaine Byrne to discuss the General Scheme of Protected Disclosure in the Public Interest Bill, 2012 - or what is more commonly known as the ‘whistle-blower legislation’.
Publication of the draft heads of a bill on whistle-blower legislation is both welcome and necessary. It is clear that Ireland needs legislation that would provide an adequate framework to protect whistle-blowers in all sectors, whether it is in the public or private sectors, against punishment, penalties or reprimand where they disclose information about wrongdoing, low standards or illegal behaviour in the workplace.”
The meeting with Paul Egan will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 3.30pm today, Tuesday 5th June, while the meeting with Dr Elaine Byrne will start at 3.30pm on Wednesday 6th June in Committee Room 4.
