The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow morning meet with representatives from Tiománaí Tacsaí na hÉireann, to discuss a recent report which explored a wide range of issues related to taxi regulation in Ireland.
The Taxi Regulation Review, which was chaired by Alan Kelly TD, Minister of State for Public and Commuter Transport and considered matters including supply and demand in the taxi market, the quality and cost of services to the consumer, driver and vehicle licensing reforms, and taxi services in rural areas.
Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD says: “The Taxi Regulation Review, which incorporated consultation with key stakeholders and the wider public, was recently published with 46 recommended actions for the industry. Discussion with Tiomanaí Tacsaí na h'Éireann is likely to centre on the report’s recommended actions. A central issue will be how an efficient, cost-effective and safe service for consumers can be provided while maintaining a living wage for drivers.”
Preceding the engagement with the taxi industry representatives, the Committee will meet separately with the Professional Agricultural Contractors of Ireland.
Deputy Hayes continues: “Agricultural contractors are a key component of Ireland's high-performing agrifood sector and our Committee looks forward to meeting with representatives of the Professional Agricultural Contractors of Ireland. The contractors believe that the Department of Transport is proposing to introduce legislation on agricultural vehicles using public roads, which will impact significantly on the work of their membership.”
The meeting takes place tomorrow morning Wednesday 4 July at 9:30 a.m. in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000.
