Oireachtas Committee discuss gender awareness and peace-building

5 Jul 2012, 18:10

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement today met representatives of Hanna’s House, a cross-border feminist peace initiative.

Chairman of the Committee Joe McHugh TD: “Our Committee has visited a number of women’s groups in Northern Ireland and the border region and today heard the need for greater gender awareness and balance across the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement.”

“The Committee heard a detailed briefing on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and its implementation on the island of Ireland, North and South. We heard that while both Ireland and the UK have National Action Plans on the Resolution, cross border coordination would be easier if Northern Ireland had a plan of its own.

“Yesterday I attended the launch in Stormont of the North/South Inter-Parliamentary Association where gender issues were also raised. The Committee will inform the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett TD and Willie Hay MLA,Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly,  Co-Chairs of the newly-established Association, on the exchanges today with Hanna’s House.”
