Workplace relations legislation - Jobs Committee to meet with Minster

10 Jul 2012, 11:21

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, will attend the meeting of the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, 11th July to discuss legislating for a world class workplace relations service.

Committee Chairman Damien English TD says: “We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with Minister Bruton to discuss changes to our workplace relations systems, in particular the Minister’s policy document, Legislating for a World-Class Workplace Relations Service.

Among the issues which will be considered by the Committee tomorrow are: a single body of first instance, called the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC); a single route for appeal, to an expanded Labour Court; a single time limit for first instance complaints, and a single time limit for appeals; a three month time-limit from complaint to hearing; a 28-day target from hearing to decision; reasoned, written decisions of all adjudications are to be published; better enforcement of awards, including provision for a determination; order enforceable at civil or criminal law; and rigorous, best practice, performance reporting arrangements between the new body and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

This is an opportunity for the Committee to provide its input now before the Heads of the proposed Workplace Relations Bill 2012 have been drafted. Committee members will have a chance to raise any issues they may have and provide feedback on very important workplace relations reform legislation before it is finalised.”

The Committee meeting takes place on Wednesday 11th July in Committee Room 1, LH2000 at 9.30 am.

The Committee will also discuss the 2012 Supplementary Estimates for Public Services – Vote 32 with the Minister at 11am.
