Environment Committee to launch report on management and protection of the Shannon

17 Jul 2012, 14:36

The Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht will launch a report on the management and protection of the River Shannon on Thursday, 19th July 2012 at 12pm in the AV Room, Leinster House, Dublin 2.

The report, which is based on advice from a working group of the Committee comprising Deputies James Bannon, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, Luke Flanagan, Denis Naughten, Brian Stanley and Robert Troy, makes a number of important recommendations and observations on the issue.

The Chairman of the Committee, Ciarán Lynch TD, said: “We have been far too complacent with regard to the river Shannon for many years and, in this light, the Committee has decided to use this report to draw immediate public attention to eight major proposals which it believes must be implemented immediately. The most immediate priority is to stop flooding, to have one organisation assume ownership of the problem, to ensure the free-flow of water on the Shannon, to maintain the water levels at appropriate levels and to protect the river banks in all their aspects - agricultural, ecological, economic and social.”
