IDA chief to brief Jobs Committee on jobs and investment strategy

17 Jul 2012, 10:13

IDA chief executive Barry O’Leary will brief the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation on its jobs and investment strategy and update Members on Foreign Direct Investment and regional focus at its meeting today, 17th July.

Committee Chairman, Damien English TD, said: “IDA Ireland recently recorded its best job figures in 10 years when it announced it had created 6,000 net jobs after job losses were subtracted from 13,000 positions created in total last year. There are now 146,000 people working in IDA-backed companies which are providing a boost to the economy.

Therefore it is an opportune time for the Committee to meet with IDA chief executive Barry O’Leary and we are looking forward to getting an update on Foreign Direct Investment in Ireland and reviewing progress over the past year. It will also provide us with an opportunity to consider the IDA’s jobs and investment strategy and receive an update on regional visits.

We will also have an opportunity to discuss the pipeline for new investment and question IDA Ireland on where it will see investments of scale in the coming months.

It also provides a chance to discuss how the global competitive landscape is impacting on FDI and the obstacles we face in attracting foreign companies to establish or expand operations here. We will also consider the conditions and policies that are required in terms of education, regulation, information, finance, tax and infrastructure to promote and encourage inward investment.”

This meeting will take place in Committee 2, Leinster House, at 1.30pm on Tuesday, 17th July, 2012.
