EU Affairs Committee to discuss developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina

18 Jul 2012, 16:47

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow meet journalist Ed Vulliamy to discuss developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A Senior International Correspondent with the Observer and Guardian newspapers, Mr Vulliamy reported extensively on Balkans conflict in the mid-1990s. In 1995 he wrote an award-winning series of investigative articles entitled “Bosnia: The Secret War”, which was published in The Guardian.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “The meeting tomorrow with Mr Vulliamy is a valuable opportunity to continue our engagement on Balkan issues.  Earlier in the year we heard Lord Paddy Ashdown caution that the strong momentum in the first 11 years of peace has reversed in recent years, with Bosnia’s fledgling institutions undermined by political instability.

\"Mr Vulliamy has worked tirelessly to keep Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international agenda and has written books on the subject. In 1996, he became the first journalist to testify in an international war crimes trial, when he appeared before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. The Committee looks forward to exchanging views with such an authoritative voice and, particularly, explore how the European Union can wield its considerable leverage more proactively in the region.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 19 July at 11:30 am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House 2000.
