Health Committee to receive update on DePuy hip replacement recall

18 Jul 2012, 16:44

Representatives from Patient Focus; the Medical Injuries Alliance and the Irish Medicines Board and officials from the Health Service Executive will update the Committee on Health and Children on the DePuy hip replacement recall at its meeting tomorrow, 19th July.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “In 2010 DePuy Orthopaedics recalled its ASR XL acetabular hip replacement model. Problems associated with the device included loosening parts, infections, dislocations, sensitivity to the metal and pain. Some Irish patients who underwent hip replacements required corrective surgery to replace the DePuy devices. This meeting will provide an opportunity for the Committee to get an update on the matter from representatives from Patient Focus; the Medical Injuries Alliance and the Irish Medicines Board and officials from the Health Service Executive so that we get a clear and comprehensive picture of the current situation. Committee members will also have a chance to raise issues regarding the recall.”

The meeting starts at 9.30am on Thursday, 19th July 2012 in Committee Room 2, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
