Committee to meet Chairperson Designate of the National Education Welfare Board

24 Jul 2012, 13:43

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will tomorrow meet Nuala Doherty, Chairperson Designate of the National Education Welfare Board (NEWB).

The Board was established in 2002 to support school attendance, participation and retention. In June 2011, the functions of the National Educational Welfare Board transferred to the office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.

Committee Chairman Jerry Buttimer TD says: “Under the Programme for Government, those who are being proposed for appointment as chairpersons of State boards are required to make themselves available to the appropriate Oireachtas Committee. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to question Nuala Doherty on her vision and priorities for the National Education Welfare Board.

“The Board plays an important role in our education system by ensuring that every child attends a recognised school or otherwise receives an appropriate education. The budgets of all public sector bodies are under intense scrutiny and Committee Members will wish to explore how improved outcomes for children and young people can be secured through the most efficient use of resources.”

The meeting starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings will be broadcast live on the UPC television network Channel 801 and will be webcast via this link: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
