3 Sep 2012, 12:54

The role that worker cooperatives can play in enterprise development, job creation and economic development will be examined by the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation tomorrow, 4th September when it meets with representatives of the Workers Cooperative Network.

Kathleen Lynch, Professor of Equality Studies, School of Social Justice UCD; Dr Stephen Nolan, Trademark; Michael Galin, Gavin & Co Accounting Services & Bridge Street Cooperative Society; and Bill Kelly, Meitheal Mid West will attend the meeting tomorrow to discuss worker owner co-operatives in the industrial and service sector.

Committee Deputy Chairman John Lyons TD says: “We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with members of the Workers Cooperative Network. Worker cooperatives are businesses which are owned and democratically managed by the workers and the Workers Cooperative Network was set up in June 2012 to promote the interests of worker cooperatives in Ireland, north and south. We will be interested in hearing about the worker co-operative model of business, how prevalent it is in Ireland, how successful it is and how it can play a part in promoting entrepreneurial activity, establishing enterprises and creating jobs.

The Committee meeting takes place on Tuesday, 4th September in Committee Room 2, LH2000 at 1.30pm.

Committee proceedings can be followed live online via this link.
