Media Launch: New Oireachtas Public Petitions System

You are invited to attend, or send a representative, to the launch of the Oireachtas Public Petitions System, which presents an important new avenue for individuals to participate in the democratic process.

Through submitting petitions online and by post, members of the public will be able to take their policy concerns directly to the heart of the Oireachtas.

The launch of the new system by the takes place on Thursday 13 September at 12 noon at the Ballymun Axis Centre and will include:

  • An introductory briefing by Peadar Tóibín TD, Cathaoirleach of the Committee;
  • A demonstration on how the user-friendly system works, and
  • Q&A with the Cathaoirleach and other Committee Members.

 

Representatives from a cross section of citizen groups will also be in attendance.

Deputy Tóibín says:  “The petitions system for the first time provides for members of the public to set the parliamentary agenda. This is good for our democratic society.  It will enhance the accountability of the Houses of the Oireachtas reviewing and investigating the concerns as requested directly by citizens.”

“The petitions we receive will allow us examine the public service not from the perspective of the policy maker or senior civil servant but through the experience of citizens and users of public services. Our Committee will be a robust body acting on behalf of our people and with a focus on making recommendations and directing change.”
