Oireachtas Committee to discuss cross border road development

12 Sep 2012, 10:48

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will tomorrow discuss the upgrading of cross border national roads with local council representatives.

The Committee will be addressed by the councillors and senior officials from Monaghan and Donegal County Councils, Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Derry City Council, and Omagh and Strabane District Councils.

The national road schemes under discussion tomorrow include:

  • N2 Clontibret to Border
  • A5 Aughnacloy to Derry
  • M1 Drynam to Lissenhall Widening Scheme
  • N13/N14 Junction at Manorcunningham

Chairman of the Committee Joe McHugh TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting is a timely opportunity to engage with a wide range of opinion in the local authority areas with most to gain from the proposed projects.  When our Commmittee last met the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade in November, Eamon Gilmore TD restated the Government’s commitment to these infrastructural projects in the medium term.

“Our Committee, acknowledging the current fiscal constraints facing the State, are encouraged that the projects will remain priorities as the finances of the State improve. An upgrade of the A5 road is imperative to the further development of the northwest. Tomorrow’s meeting will allow us to explore the delivery of these crucial pieces of infrastructure for the island of Ireland and the border region in particular.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 13 September at 11:15 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
