Agriculture Committee to meet companies on developing farm IT sector

17 Sep 2012, 16:11

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow discuss how to unleash the potential of farm management IT systems.

The Committee will meet representatives from two of the largest suppliers of the systems in Ireland, Kingswood Computers and Agrinet. Both companies develop software that covers all aspects of record keeping and management on farms.

Their presence at tomorrow's meeting will afford the Committee an oppportunity to assess how the farm management software industry can be developed to its maximum.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Reliable and high speed access to data is a vital part of modern farm management. To sustain a high performing agriculture sector in Ireland, it is vital that the technology is delivered in the most effective manner possible. Our Committee will tomorrow hear from the representatives of two companies who are at the cutting edge of this important component of our agrifood industry.

“A number of state agencies are also involved in the provision of similar software and the meeting will touch on how the interests of the public and private sectors are best balanced in the provision of IT to Irish farming.”

This meeting will take place 2 pm tomorrow, Tuesday 18 September in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
