PAC to examine allowances paid to An Garda Síochána with Garda Commissioner

31 Oct 2012, 17:57

In its penultimate meeting on the examination of allowances paid in the public sector, the Committee of Public Accounts will meet with Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan tomorrow, Thursday, 1st November, 2012.

Chairman of the Committee John McGuinness, TD, said: “As part of our review of public sector allowances, members will have a chance to explore the scope of the allowances being paid to members of An Garda Síochána.

In total, 108 various allowances are payable to members of An Garda Síochána, with 11 of those identified for withdrawal. We are aware that many of the allowances paid to Gardai reflect the unique nature of their work. Many of these have been negotiated over time and are deemed necessary to the work of the police force.

Our meeting with the Garda Commissioner will provide Committee Members with an opportunity to examine the allowance regime in greater detail, study the business cases behind the various allowances and consider how the system may be streamlined and simplified.”

This meeting starts at 2pm on Thursday, 1st November in Committee Room 1, LH 2000.
