Health Committee agrees amended motion supporting efforts to reduce smoking on Leinster House campus

15 Nov 2012, 16:28

The Committee on Health and Children has agreed an amended motion put forward by Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin and seconded by Deputy Catherine Byrne supporting efforts to reduce smoking on the Leinster House campus.

The amended motion said: “That the Joint Committee affirming its strong support for efforts to reduce smoking, calls for a process of consultation with all who work in Leinster House aimed at creating a smoking free campus, including the buildings and the environs of this institution.”

Deputy Ó Caoláin’s motion amended a motion from Senator John Crown calling for a ban on smoking on the Leinster House campus.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “The motion which was agreed by the Committee today supports efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and seeks to work in collaboration with staff and Leinster House authorities towards creating a smoking free campus in Leinster House.”

The agreed motion will now be forwarded to the Joint Administration Committee for its consideration.
