The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht will meet Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for the Environment today, Monday 19th November, 2012 to discuss environment issues likely to arise during the Irish EU Presidency.
Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Michael McCarthy, TD said: “Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union commences in January and today we will have an opportunity to consider environmental priorities for the six months with Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for the Environment.
The European Parliament has grown in power post-Lisbon and this will need to be factored in to Ireland’s approach to implementing an ambitious agenda. Oireachtas Committees will contribute to a vibrant parliamentary dimension during the Presidency, with a meeting involving the Chairs of environment committees from national parliaments scheduled for May 2013.”
This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm today, Monday, 19th November 2012.
