The EU Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis will address the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 6th February 2013.
Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “Stavros Lambrinidis, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece and a former Vice-President of the European Parliament, was appointed as EU Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights on 25 July 2012 and took office on 1 September, with an initial mandate running until 30 June, 2014. His role is to enhance the effectiveness and visibility of EU human rights policy. He has a broad, flexible mandate, giving him the ability to adapt to circumstances, and he works closely with the European External Action Service, which provides him with full support.
“The creation of the post of Special Representative is part of the measures taken by the EU Member States to build human-rights considerations into EU foreign policy as stated in the Treaty of Lisbon.
“We’re delighted to have to opportunity to meet with Mr Lambrinidis and discuss in more detail the work and role of the Special Representative for Human Rights.”
This meeting will start in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 2.30 pm on Wednesday, 6th February 2013.
