11 Feb 2013, 12:44

The Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet with Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan TD tomorrow, Tuesday, 12th February, 2013 to discuss maintaining and supporting rural communities and developing an employment strategy to sustain such communities.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Tomorrow we will meet with Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan to consider a report The Rural Challenge – Empowering Rural Communities to Achieve Growth and Sustainability. The study from the Chairpersons of the Kerry Executives of the Irish Rural Dwellers Association, the Irish Farmers Association and the Gaelic Athletic Association, examines how to maintain and support rural communities, and develop an employment strategy to sustain such communities. It will be a chance for Committee members to discuss with the Minister the challenges rural communities are facing in terms of economic, social and cultural development. We will also examine what measures can be put in place to develop and improve the social and economic situation in rural Ireland, particularly in areas such as the tourism, renewable energy, agri-food and marine industries.”

Before the Committee meets with Minister Hogan, the Committee will carry out scrutiny of EU legislative proposals:

COM(2012)15, Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 2004/40/EC on minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents (electromagnetic fields) (eighteenth individual Directive within the meaning of Article 16(1) of Directive 89/391/EEC)
