Finance Committee Chairman meets German Deputy Finance Minister

12 Feb 2013, 20:02

Chairman of Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Ciarán Lynch TD today had an informal meeting with German Deputy Finance Minister Steffen Kampeter in Leinster House today, Tuesday 12th February.

Deputy Lynch said: “We had a very positive, enlightening and productive meeting which dealt with a number of key issues of mutual interest, including the recent promissory note deal, the Multiannual Financial Framework agreed at the European Union Summit last week which sets out the EU’s spending plans for 2014-2020, banking union and general economic matters.

“We discussed how Europe needs a positive bailout exit story, and how Ireland could be that success story. Notwithstanding last week's deal on the promissory notes, it was emphasised that the issue of direct bank recapitalisation by the ESM, which would separate banking and sovereign debt, needs to be progressed as a matter of urgency and not be left to slip down the wider political agenda.

“I was delighted to have this opportunity to discuss many of these issues and we’re looking forward to revisiting many of these matters when the Chairpersons of Finance Committees of EU Member States and the European Parliament meet on 24-25th February to discuss future strategies for better integration, growth and budgetary control. This meeting forms part of the parliamentary dimension of Ireland’s EU Presidency.”
