Agriculture Committee to continue discussions on use of commonage lands

19 Feb 2013, 09:34

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will this afternoon meet with officials from the Department of Agriculture and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to discuss proposals to ensure good agricultural and environmental practices on farms.

19 February 2013

It is part of a continuing series of meetings the Committee is hosting on the use of commonage lands.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Tomorrow’s engagement is part of a series of Committee meetings in which the use of commonage lands is being considered. A common-sense approach is necessary in these areas and our Committee will have an opportunity to hear from both the Department and the NPWS on the joint framework plan for commonage. This joint initiative between the NPWS and the Department involved teams combining agricultural and ecological skills surveying all commonage areas in Ireland.

“The meeting tomorrow provides an opportunity for us to hear about the data collected in the survey and how the Department proposes to advance the joint framework plan for commonage. Both presentations tomorrow will inform our Committee on what national policies on the use of commonage lands might be appropriate.”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm today Tuesday 19 February in Committee Room 3, LH 2000.
