Agriculture Committee to meet farmers groups on commonage lands

25 Feb 2013, 11:26

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow afternoon meet with representatives from the Irish Farmers' Association and the United Farmers Association to discuss proposals to ensure good agricultural and environmental practices on farms. It is part of a continuing series of meetings the Committee is hosting on the use of commonage lands.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says:  “Tomorrow’s engagement is part of a series of Committee meetings in which the use of commonage lands is being considered. A common-sense approach is necessary in these areas and our Committee has, over the last few weeks, heard a wide spectrum of opinion on the joint framework plan for commonage, being devised by the  Department of Agriculture and the National Parks and Wildlife Servi ce . The meeting tomorrow provides an opportunity for us to hear the distinct perspectives of the Irish Farmers Association and the United Farmers Association. Both presentations tomorrow will inform our Committee on what national policies on the use of commonage lands might be appropriate.”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm tomorrow Tuesday 25 February in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. It will commence with scrutiny of a series of EU legislative proposals. Committee proceedings can be followed live at:  http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/watchlisten/
