Agriculture Committee to consider motion on Diseases of Animals Act with Minister

27 Feb 2013, 14:06

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow meets with Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to consider a motion on extending provisions of the Diseases of Animals Act.

26 February 2013

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Animal health and welfare is fundamental to the safety of the food we are producing, which is in turn impacts of the profitability of our export led agri-food sector. The Minister is seeking this committee’s agreement to continue with a provision introduced in 2001 in response to the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak. It provides for the appointment of authorised officers with powers to safeguard animal health and related issues. It is anticipated that the Animal Health and Welfare Bill 2012, which is currently at Report stage, will remove the time-limited nature of the existing provision.”

The meeting takes place at 10:30 am tomorrow Thursday 28 February in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
