EU Affairs Committee to hear from leading journalists on Europe's future

27 Feb 2013, 18:06

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs continues its national debate on the future of the European Union tomorrow afternoon with RTE’s Sean Whelan, Dan O’Brien of the Irish Times and Ann Cahill of the Irish Examiner.

27 February 2013

The meeting is expected to explore:

  • Financial, budgetary and economic policy integration in the EU;
  • Democratic accountability, legitimacy and political union; and
  • The UK and the EU - implications for Ireland

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “Last week, we heard insightful contributions from economists to commence a national debate on the future of the European Union. With the discussions on closer integration advancing at European Union level, our Committee intends to engage Irish citizens and civil society to ensure that they are at the forefront of this debate.
What happens at European level impacts in every corner of our country. Media outlets have an indispensable role to play in informing the public on issues of national concern. However, wading through the complex institutional rules and jargon to create an engaging story is often a challenge for journalists. Our meeting tomorrow with three respected commentators on EU matters will be a valuable opportunity to explore how to better connect the European Union with the wider public.”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm tomorrow 28 February in Committee Room 2, LH 2000.
