Agriculture Committee to meet supermarket representatives

4 Mar 2013, 15:59

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow meets with representatives from RGDATA and Retail Ireland to discuss the relationship between multiples and producers.

4 March 2013

Retail Ireland is the national representative body for the retail sector and includes the major supermarket groups among its membership, while RGDATA is representative group for Ireland’s independently family owned outlets.

The meeting will cover a number of topics, including the proposed Code of Conduct for the grocery goods sector; pricing and the impact on primary and secondary suppliers; support for local produce; and food labelling. It is part of a series of meetings on the subject, with individual chains such as Tesco, Musgraves, Lidl and Aldi scheduled to appear before the Committee in the coming weeks.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting commences a series of engagements on the approach of food retailers, and their relationship with primary and secondary producers. Conscious of the need to safeguard a vibrant retail sector, our Committee is also aware of the on-going pressure on food pricing, with primary producers in particular increasingly squeezed. Food labelling, which is a live issue and has caused considerable disquiet in recent months, is also likely to feature in tomorrow’s discussions.”

The meeting takes place at 2pm tomorrow Tuesday 5 March in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
