The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow continues its discussions on the relationship between supermarkets and primary and secondary food producers when it meets with representatives from Aldi.
17 April 2013
The debate will centre on the following topics:
- The proposed Code of Conduct for the grocery goods sector;
- Pricing and impact on primary and secondary suppliers;
- Support for local produce; and
- Labelling
Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “We look forward to hearing from representatives of this important discounter, who have increased their presence in the Irish grocery sector considerably in recent years. Tomorrow's meeting is the third in a series that the Committee is hosting with retailers and their representative organisations. The discussions with Aldi are expected to touch on the perceived lack of a level playing pitch for smaller players in the supply chain. Committee Members have expressed concern in previous meetings that excessive pressure on pricing can be driven both by larger suppliers on smaller retailers on the one hand as well as by larger multiples on smaller suppliers on the other. The views expressed tomorrow afternoon will flow into a report that the Committee intends to publish on the matter.”
The meeting takes place at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 tomorrow 18 April 2013. It will commence with scrutiny of EU legislative priority proposals COM(2012)551, COM(2012)608, COM(2012)668; and non-priority proposals COM(2013)9, COM(2013)46, COM(2013)62, COM(2013)73, COM(2013)101, COM(2013)106.
