Agriculture Committee to meet with farming and food and drink industry representatives

22 Apr 2013, 12:50

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow continues its discussions on the relationship between supermarkets and primary and secondary food producers when it meets with representatives from the IBEC’s Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) and the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA).

22 April 2013

FDII is the main trade association for the food and drink industry in Ireland while the IFA represents 88,000 farmers nationwide. The debate will centre on the following topics:

  • The proposed Code of Conduct for the grocery goods sector;
  • Pricing and impact on primary and secondary suppliers;
  • Support for local produce; and
  • Labelling

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “We look forward to hearing the distinct perspectives of the food and drink industry as well as the largest farming organisation in the country. Having met with representatives from a range of retailers in recent weeks, tomorrow’s meeting affords our Committee the opportunity to engage with primary and secondary food producers to discuss their respective relationships with supermarkets.  The discussions tomorrow afternoon will flow into a report that the Committee intends to publish on the matter.”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 tomorrow 23 April 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
