Transport and Communications Committee resumes discussions on alcohol sponsorship

23 Apr 2013, 13:22

Representatives from Federation of Irish Sport, the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland and Horse Racing Ireland will be before the Committee on Transport and Communications to discuss the implications of a possible ban on the sponsorship of major sporting events by alcohol drinks companies.

23 April 2013

The Federation of Irish Sport was established in 2002 and comprises about 100 different sporting organisations, while Horse Racing Ireland is the commercial semi-state body responsible for the development and promotion of the thoroughbred horse racing and breeding industry in Ireland. The membership of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland spans manufacturers, distributors and the retail sectors.

Committee Chairman Tom Hayes TD says: \"Last year, proposals to curb alcohol misuse were presented by a Department of Health Steering Group which included the phasing out of alcohol sponsorship of sporting and cultural events by 2016. Our Committee agreed to consider the matter as part of our current work programme. This is the third meeting on this issue, having previously heard the views of the GAA, IRFU and FAI who oppose the proposal and from Alcohol Action Ireland and the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, who are long standing advocates of such a ban. In continuing our careful consideration of the matter, tomorrow we will have an opportunity to hear from representatives of the Federation of Irish Sport, the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland and Horse Racing Ireland.\"

The meeting takes place at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 24 April in Committee Room 4, LH 2000, and can be viewed online via the following link
