EU Affairs Committee to meet Central Bank Governor on EMU

29 Apr 2013, 11:23

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow afternoon meet with the Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland to discuss the likely future course of Economic and Monetary Union and the implications for Ireland. Prof Patrick Honohan will be accompanied by Central Bank colleagues Patrick Brady, Director of Policy and Risk, and Colm Larkin.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “We look forward to engaging with Prof Honohan and his colleagues on an evolving European Economic and Monetary Union. We expect to discuss the current approach of the ECB with him and whether policy was likely to change, particularly in light of continuing debate on growth and austerity in Brussels and a number of European capitals.

\"The meeting tomorrow forms part of this Committee's on-going consideration of Economic and Monetary Union. Last week, we engaged with leading NUIG economists on the current developments in closer fiscal, banking and economic integration. It was argued that bolder monetary and fiscal policy actions are needed at European level to end the economic crisis and that there was a role for the ECB in cutting interest rates further and expand its credit programmes to support lending to small businesses. \"

The meeting takes place at 2 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 tomorrow 30 April 2013. Committee proceedings can be followed live here: http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/watchlisten/
