Social Protection Committee to discuss rent supplement scheme

14 May 2013, 17:56

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection meets with officials from the Department of Social Protection to consider the rent supplement scheme.

14 May 2013

The propose of the rent supplement is to provide short-term income support to eligible tenants living in private rented accommodation whose means are insufficient to meet their accommodation costs and who do not have accommodation available to them from any other source.

Chair of the Committee Joanna Tuffy TD says: “The Committee looks forward to engaging with Department Officials on the rent supplement scheme. The supplement is paid to people living in private rented accommodation who cannot provide for the cost of their accommodation from their own resources. The presence of Department Officials will provide Committee Members with an opportunity to raise a number of issues of concern, in particular relating to rent limits, processing times and rent deposits. We will also be interested in exploring the recent moves to increase flexibility in the system, making it easier for recipients of the payment to take up full time employment. ”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 15 May at 1pm in Committee Room 3. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
