Agriculture Committee to meet milk producer representatives

20 May 2013, 13:45

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow resumes its discussions on the relationship between supermarkets and primary and secondary food producers when it meets with representatives from a range of milk producers.

20 May 2013

Addressing the Committee will be the West Cork Liquid Milk Producers Group and the Fresh Milk Producers Group. The National Milk Agency, which regulates the supply of milk for liquid consumption throughout the State, will also address the Committee.

The debate will centre on the following topics:

  • The proposed Code of Conduct for the grocery goods sector;
  • Pricing and impact on primary and secondary suppliers;
  • Support for local produce; and
  • Labelling

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Tomorrow's meeting is expected to conclude the series that the Committee is hosting with retailers and their representative organisations, as well as with the representatives of farmers and producers. Discussions with a range of milk producer representatives are expected to touch on the on-going pressure on pricing those farmers who are supplying the liquid milk trade are experiencing. We will also hear the valuable perspective from representatives of the National Milk Agency, whose membership comprises producers, processors, distributors, retailers and consumers.  The views expressed tomorrow afternoon will flow into a report that the Committee intends to publish on the matter.”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm tomorrow 21 May 2013 in Committee Room 3, LH 2000.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
