EU Affairs Committee to meet Bavarian counterparts

22 May 2013, 14:57

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs will tomorrow receive a delegation from the European Committee of the Bavarian Parliament. The meeting is scheduled to consider recent developments in the European Union.

22 May 2013

Vice-Chairman of the Committee Paschal Donohoe TD says: “A key priority of this Committee is to engage with fellow parliamentarians to ensure that the challenges being faced by Ireland and its citizens are fully understood across Europe. The German federal system comprises 16 states, of which Bavaria is the second largest. This is a timely opportunity to engage, on a cross party basis, with Members of this influential regional parliament within the German federal system.

“The Bavarian parliamentarians are expected to fill the Committee in on their work in defending the interests of their constituents in Europe.  The meeting is expected to consider a range of developments in the European Union, including recent moves to bolster stability in the Eurozone and to respond to the pan-European youth unemployment crisis. Representing an industrious and prosperous region of Germany, they may have a particular perspective on what they see as the job creation strategies required in other parts of Europe.  We look forward to the exchange of views with the Bavarian delegation and hope to impart an understanding of what our Committee sees as the priorities for Ireland and the European Union in fostering economic recovery.”

The meeting with the Bavarian delegation commences at 2pm tomorrow 23 May in Committee Room 2, LH 2000. The meeting can be watched live here.
