Foreign Affairs Committee to mark Africa Day with focus on trade in the developing world

28 May 2013, 11:25

To mark Africa Day, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade will tomorrow, Wednesday, 29 th May 2013, host a discussion on trade and investment as tools of sustainable economic growth in Africa with the NGOs Value Added in Africa and Traidlinks.

Committee Chairman Pat Breen TD said: “While humanitarian funding and longer term development assistance are very important elements in Ireland’s aid policy programme, international trade with countries in the developing world can play an important role in dealing with poverty by creating sustainable employment opportunities, improving living conditions and providing educational opportunities. Tomorrow, as part of events to mark Africa Day, we will meet with two organisations promoting ethical and sustainable trade in the developing world. Traidlinks’ objectives are to promote the relief of poverty and the advancement of education by supporting enterprise in developing countries, while Value Added in Africa exists to research and raise awareness of how African producers can move up the value-chain, and to help Irish businesses trade ethically. This is an opportunity for Committee Members to hear in detail how trade and enterprise can help build livelihoods, create opportunities and promote sustainable businesses in developing countries.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 29 th May 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
