Education Committee to consider history teachers' concerns on Junior Cert curriculum

11 Jun 2013, 17:27

The History Teachers' Association of Ireland will tomorrow outline their concerns to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection in relation to the changes that are being introduced to the Junior Certificate curriculum.

11 June 2013

Officials from the Department of Education and Skills will also address the Committee on the rationale for the new curriculum.
History is one of 21 subjects available to schools for inclusion in the new Junior certificate programme, within which Irish, English and Mathematics have mandatory status. The History Teachers' Association are expected to point to benefits of having history as a core subject for Junior cycle students.

#Chair of the Committee Joanna Tuffy TD says: \"The coming years will see the commemoration of the centenary of many defining events on the island of Ireland. Committee Members hold the view  that history is a valuable subject, which contains many lessons which resonate to this day. We look forward to hearing representatives from the History Teachers' Association of Ireland who will outline what they see as the dangers for the status of history within the Junior Certificate curriculum. Officials from the Department of Education and Skills are expected to point to the aims and advantages of the new curriculum and that history as a subject will not diminish under it.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow 12 June at 1pm in Committee Room 3. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
