Transport Committee to discuss regional and local road maintenance

11 Jun 2013, 14:50

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with representatives of the County and City Managers’ Association who will discuss the maintenance of regional and local roads.

11 June 2013

The County and City Managers’ Association describes itself as the “representative voice” of the local government management network, which works to the influence the development and implementation of relevant policy.

Michael Walsh of Waterford City Council, John Mulholland of Kilkenny County Council and John McLaughlin of Donegal County Council will present to the Committee on behalf of their counterparts in 34 primary local authorities.

Committee Vice-Chairman John O'Mahony TD says: “Funding for national roads, administered centrally by the National Roads Authority, has led to significant improvements in Ireland's network of primary routes in the past decade. Regional and local roads, however, are generally less well funded. Local councils are responsible for these roads and tomorrow's meeting is expected to focus on the ongoing funding pressures being experienced by local authorities in maintaining these routes.

\"The quality of local and regional roads has a significant impact on the quality of life of citizens in both urban and rural communities in every corner of the country. Bearing in mind the ongoing pressures on public finances, we look forward to hearing from the County and City Managers tomorrow on the practical steps that might be taken to better maintain regional and local roads.”

The Committee meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 12 June, commencing at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4. Public proceedings can be viewed online via the following link.
