Annual Oireachtas Hill Walk: TDs and Senators climb mountain for Rett Syndrome Ireland

2 Jul 2013, 17:50

TDs and senators were joined by a number of MLAs from the Northern Ireland Assembly for a successful 2013 Oireachtas hill walk, which took place on Sunday in the Mourne Mountains. Guides for the walk were provided by Mountaineering Ireland.

2 July 2013

The event was organised to raise funds for Rett Syndrome Ireland, an association of parents and families of people affected with Rett Syndrome. Rett Syndrome is a rare neurodevelopment disorder resulting in learning and physical disability.

Oireachtas Members and staff, along with MLAs and Margaret Ritchie MP, commenced the day's activities at the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, located at the foot of the Mourne mountains. Those who took part in the day's events included Jimmy Deenihan TD, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD, Eric Byrne, TD, Helen McEntee TD, Senator Catherine Noone, Senator Terry Brennan, Margaret Ritchie MP, Caitriona Ruane MLA, Conal McDevitt and Cllr. Paul Gribben

Oireachtas Hill Walk Committee Chairman Jimmy Deenihan TD says: “On Sunday, Oireachtas Members and staff took in the stunning views of the Mourne mountains during a variety of hikes for all abilities. It was a particular honour for us to be introduced to the beautiful Mournes yesterday morning by Dawson Stelfox, who in 1993 became the first Irishman to climb Mount Everest. I wish to acknowledge too the help of Mountaineering Ireland whose volunteers led the groups so adeptly through the distinctive landscape. Finally, I thank all hikers and sponsors for all their efforts in raising money for Rett Syndrome Ireland, a most worthy cause.”
