Transport Committee to meet Tourism representatives

2 Jul 2013, 17:48

Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and the Irish Hotels Federation are before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to consider the Irish tourism industry’s marketing strategies for 2013.

2 July 2013

Fáilte Ireland is the national tourism development agency, Tourism Ireland is the North South body responsible for marketing the island of Ireland, and the Irish Hotels Federation represent almost 1,000 hotels and guesthouses nationwide. Discussions are likely to centre on the impact of the Gathering campaign on tourist numbers and the ongoing challenges in attracting tourists from the key British market.

Oireachtas Committee Vice-Chairman John O'Mahony TD says: “Tourism is an important indigenous industry, employing thousands of people around the country in rural and urban areas. After four difficult years, Irish tourism has been experiencing an upturn in fortunes so far in 2013, with some evidence that the Gathering initiative is contributing to an increase in numbers from most markets. Returning the industry to growth would have major economic benefits and help to sustain and create jobs in every corner of the country. We look forward to engaging with Tourism representatives tomorrow to assess progress so far in 2013 and what targeted efforts might be made, particularly in the domestic and British markets.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 3 July at 9.30 a.m. in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000. It will commence with Motion regarding the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 (Restricted Electrical Works) Regulations 2013 with the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte TD.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
