EU Affairs Committee to launch report on the need for a European Youth Guarantee

3 Jul 2013, 16:38

You are invited to attend, or send a representative, to the launch of a report by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs on the need for a European Youth Guarantee. The report launch takes place tomorrow morning in the A/V Room in Leinster House.

3 July 2013

The Committee agreed in February to produce a report on the need for a Youth Guarantee and considered the topic widely in its discussions since then, including at a specific hearing on the topic on 21 March.

Event: Launch of ‘Report on the need for a Youth Guarantee’
Location: A/V Room, Leinster House
Date: Thursday,4 July 2013
Time: 10 am

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD, Report Rapporteur Senator Kathryn Reilly and other Members will be in attendance and available for questions.

Deputy Hannigan says: “There is no more urgent issue facing Ireland and Europe than that of unemployment, and youth unemployment in particular. A Youth Guarantee would ensure young people receive a quality offer of employment or of continued education, an apprenticeship or traineeship within four months of becoming unemployed. This report is a timely intervention from our cross party Committee which reflects the pressing need to secure a Youth Guarantee.”

Senator Reilly says: “The financial crisis of recent years has had a disproportionate impact on young people in peripheral economies. With almost six million people between the ages of 15 and 24 without a job, the threat of a lost generation looms large. Discussions are advancing in Brussels at the moment and this report outlines the steps required to ensure that an effective, meaningful and robust Youth Guarantee can be realised. The report makes a number of practical recommendations for policy makers both on a pan-European level and within Ireland.”

Copies will be available at the launch and the report will be published online following the event.
