The Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD this afternoon congratulated Emily O'Reilly on her election to the post of European Ombudsman. He also acknowledged her assistance to the Committee since its establishment.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn says: \"On behalf of the Committee, I wish to congratulate Emily O'Reilly on her appointment to the role of European Ombudsman today. As Ombudsman in Ireland, our Committee regularly engaged with her office on a wide range of issues. As well as her dedication and professionalism, Committee Members appreciated her candid and forthright presentation style, underpinned by the fundamental motivation that public services are delivered in a manner in which the rights of each and every citizen are vindicated. I wish her well in her new role in investigating public complaints about the European Institutions and various EU agencies and, in doing so, help bridge the disconnect that many individual citizens feel with the European Union.\"
