3 Jul 2013, 10:20

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will this afternoon meet with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

3 July 2013

Commissioner Simon O’Brien, Chairperson, Commissioner Kieran FitzGerald, Commissioner Carmel Foley along with Graham Doyle, Acting Head of Communications and Research at Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission are before the Committee.

The meeting will consider the following GSOC reports:

  • Special Report by the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission to the Minister for Justice Equality and Defence issued pursuant to section 80(5) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
  • Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission Annual Report 2012.

Reports can be accessed on the GSOC website.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says: \"Within the Committee's orders of reference, we may liaise with other Ombudsmen, regulatory public bodies or bodies established for the purpose of redress. As well as considering the recently published Annual Report 2012, the Committee will discuss issues arising from a GSOC special report which outlines concerns around Garda handling of informants. With the investigation taking four years to complete, the Commission also referred to the difficulties experienced by the investigation team in obtaining evidence from the Garda Síochána.  We look forward to engaging with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission this afternoon on issues arising from these two important reports. \"

The meeting takes place this afternoon Wednesday 3 July in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. It can be followed live here.
