Social Protection Committee to meet Minister on Budget 2014

9 Jul 2013, 15:51

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow meet with the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD for a briefing on the upcoming budget.

9 July 2013

The Programme for Government stipulates that Committees examine Estimates on a whole-of-year basis, and this meeting forms part of that initiative.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “Pre-budget engagement with the Minister is an important component this Committee’s work and we will wish to explore how the current budgetary challenges facing the State will impact on the budget of its biggest spending department. While the Minister may not be in a position to give precise details, the meeting will allow Committee members to question her on the likely general thrust of the €20 billion Social Protection budget.

“The Minister met over 30 voluntary and community groups on Friday as part of a pre-Budget Forum and the outcomes from those discussions are also expected to be raised at our meeting tomorrow. Our Committee will be keen to question the Minister on how the impact of any adjustments, particularly on the most vulnerable sections of society, can be minimised.”

The meeting takes place at 10 am tomorrow morning Wednesday 10 July in Committee Room 3. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
