Petitions Committee to consider Employment Appeals Tribunal process

17 Jul 2013, 17:23

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow morning hear from petitioner John O’Sullivan who will outline what he perceives as the shortcomings in the Employment Appeals Tribunal process.

17 July 2013

The Employment Appeals Tribunal describes itself as an independent body established to provide a timely, inexpensive and relatively informal means for adjudication of disputes on employment rights under the various legislations that come within the Tribunal’s scope.

Officials from Departments of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and of Social Protection, as well as representatives from IBEC, MANDATE and the ICTU will respond to the petitioner.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says: “The petitions system provides for members of the public to set the parliamentary agenda.  Tomorrow will see an individual petitioner, John O’Sullivan, raise the concerns he has in relation to the Employment Appeals Tribunal. In particular, his petition points to the lack of obligation on the employer to pay an award by the Tribunal. The petitioner also suggests that an employer should be required to lodge a bond as security at the outset of the process. Officials from the two government departments with responsibility in the area as well as employers’ and trade union representatives will outline their perspectives on the issues raised.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 18 July in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 10 am. Public proceedings can be viewed online via this link.
