IDA Ireland accounts and annual report to be examined by PAC

18 Sep 2013, 14:11

Chief Executive of IDA Ireland Barry O’Leary will come before the Committee of Public Accounts tomorrow, Thursday 19th September 2013.

Committee Chairman John McGuinness TD said: “Last year was a strong one for the IDA. Net job creation was up in 2012 from 2011 by almost 11% at 6,570. This was the highest level for a decade. Around 60% of 2012 jobs were from the high-tech sectors.

There are many issues which members may wish to explore with Barry O’Leary and his colleagues when they appear before the Committee tomorrow. We will get a chance to explore the level of corporation tax that is paid by multi nationals here and also the scope that is available to the IDA to offer incentives so that such companies locate here. The IDA is well placed to discuss this matter with the Committee.

Among the other issues of interest for the Committee is the cooperation between the IDA and NAMA with regards to ensuring there is sufficient and suitable office accommodation available for investing companies. The geographical spread of jobs throughout the country and strategies to increase jobs outside Dublin and Cork is also likely to feature. EU regional aid rules and employment grants could also form part of this discussion.

The Committee may wish to discuss the IDA’s progress in new markets such as China, India, Korea and Japan and how Ireland’s brand recognition is progressing in these locations. Strategies to ensure that the pharmaceutical sector continues to thrive may also be on the agenda. We may also wish to examine progress on targets in IDA Ireland’s Horizon 2020 strategy. A discussion could also include an examination of how these targets are set.

The cost per job figure, how this is calculated and how the IDA is reducing their costs are also issues of interest to the Committee.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 1 at 10am tomorrow, Thursday, 19th September 2013.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
